Job description

Most building draftspersons work in design offices with drafters who, under the supervision of design engineers, prepare the overall plans. The draftsperson then produces the detailed drawings, checks certain calculations, and prepares the detail drawings and reproduction work.

The building draftsperson generally works in technical design offices or civil engineering administrations, architecture firms, urban agencies, and municipal services. With experience and further training, they can move into roles in urban planning, construction, or responsibilities within an urban agency or design office.

The mission of a building draftsperson is mainly to produce projects intended for construction by developing plan drawings and written descriptions. They may be required to:

  • Draw architectural, structural and building services plans (plumbing, electricity, ventilation) for buildings or building complexes (residential or commercial).
  • Draw structural plans designed by a building engineer.

In their work, they notably use:

  • Drafting tools.
  • Professional computing tools and drafting software.
  • Communication techniques.

They should also have knowledge of intellectual property, regulations (Moroccan and foreign) and communication principles in French and technical English.

Professional relationships

This area covers all necessary links with other functions inside and outside the company. The building draftsperson keeps constant contact with the technical management department or directly with clients to gather needs and obtain approval of projects (construction plans, details, modifications, etc.).

Autonomy and responsibility

The draftsperson’s work comes at the beginning of the project. They interpret and apply drafting techniques to obtain client validation before printing. Autonomy depends on assigned tasks and the organization; in small or medium-sized structures, they may work directly with the client. In an architecture firm, responsibility is limited to tasks defined by the technical department (manager or project lead).
